I hope, I really hope, that the average citizen can see right through this kind of rabid, self-centered, ultra useless pseudo-"journalism". There are myriad examples on both sides, and they seem to occupy center stage, feeding the deeply partisan need to be right, and have your political opponent be WRONG. But it doesn't serve a very constructive purpose in a healthy democracy. I blame the education system. People should have a healthy skepticism for any "news", right or left, being produced by groups with an agenda.

They rarely cite original source material, they twist and mis-report actual quotes often, they deeply editorialize even the most basic news story. They, and the sites, blogs and other media like them on the right, are welcome to go bye-bye ASAP in my book. Unfortunately, they have an audience because the education system has failed the average american. Sad.

Again, I hope people can see through the clearly unethical attempt to tie a 2017 facebook post from an obviously racist GOP nutjob in Pennsylvania to comments made a couple of days ago by a GOP candidate in Florida. The two things have NOTHING to do with one another. This is classic psycho-journalism, where you start with a story that is going to get your less-rabid, but still non-thinking consumer all riled up against something that is clearly immoral, then try to lead that same consumer to believe the same thing about an utterly unrelated topic. It is blatant and insulting and crass and if I were a thinking left-winger I would be offended that RawStory thinks that little of my ability to think for myself.

Keep it up, my friend, @stumbler ... the fact that RawStory is tripling-down on this, and that you are eating it up like a wide-eyed child, doesn't make it any more true, or useful, or ethical. You're better than this in my mind. Swallow your pride and let it go - these guys are not worth your time and attention, truly. If you need some deeper, better written, thoroughly sourced and intelligent left-wing news I can recommend a handful of spectacular choices.

 

And I think you are deliberately ignoring a very clear and present reality. With the election of Trump racism is very much in vogue with Rebublivans and especially Trump supporters and that should be called out.

I have no intention of giving DeSantis a "free pass". He may indeed be a horrible, horrible person. I have done a small bit of research on him prompted by our discussion here, but even if he turns out to be the spawn of satan, that wont make RawStory any more justified in their shitty journalism.

Let's say some guy got the shit beat out of him by a jealous husband at a bar who thought the guy was making un-blinking goo-goo eyes at his wife, but he really just had a glass eye. Hopefully you'd be outraged by that violence. But if you found out a couple of weeks later that the guy liked to torture and drown cats, would that make the barroom beating any more justifiable? So I guess I have to repeat this... again.

So anyway... White Privilege does NOT mean that you feel more privileged or at an advantage over anyone else (any other race). In fact if anything, it is a state of being oblivious to the differences. Now that may sound like a positive as though the individual sees all races the same, yet it is not (and more on why in a moment). It is actually more akin to "let them eat cake," or an extreme ignorance of the situation of others, in this case hardships of race.

In case you don't understand that phrase, "let them eat cake (brioche, a very high quality/luxury bread)" comes from a tale of a great princess who was informed that the peasants were starving to death (while the wealthy lived in extremely excessive opulence), that they had no bread. Her response was "then let them eat cake." Some taking that as though she didn't care, yet more than likely that she was simply so ignorant to the fact that someone might not have food, so in her mind, and due to her "privilege" the answer was simple. If you don't have bread (that moment) then eat the cake instead unable to fathom that someone might have neither....In China there is a similar and older tale attributed to Emperor Hui. "An ancient Chinese emperor who, being told that his subjects didn't have enough rice to eat, replied, 'Why don't they eat meat?'" IOW, so oblivious to other people that he couldn't understand how when you didn't even have the most basic food staple, how that meant you had nothing.

In any case, white privilege speaks of how white people often cannot empathize with the hardships of other races, in this case in America. Not so much that they don't care, yet that they don't/can't understand not having lived being non-white. Now some will try and tell you that "poverty level whites have it just as hard, and feel the same." That is absolutely untrue. Whites living in poverty feel like they got a raw deal, ripped off, screwed, didn't get the breaks others did and so on... Yet they only feel that way in that they feel privileged, as though more is what they deserve just like everyone else. So they feel basically equal to other whites/people, but were simply fucked over for X reason(s). IOW, have the same opportunity as all others, but were cheated of it...BUT...it can be fixed or changed.

Other non-white races ARE treated different. Sometimes even better, yet when treated better it as though it is some magnanimous gift by whites toward someone who is less than them. As though to make them feel better, patronizing. Most times however they are treated in all ways as though less and different. Certainly not as deserving, and as though every positive in their life is a gracious gift, an exception getting more than they "actually" deserve. Other races are hit with that attitude be it through prejudice to even overcompensation to a point that they are made to feel different by white culture. They're made to feel it every day of their lives, and in every avenue of it......ALTHOUGH, it is not always intentional.

Here is a GREAT ad from "Viceland" channel that shows how it shifts mindsets and how it forces those non-white to think differently. At times justified, at other times not, yet they still feel it.



I myself have actually experienced this all of my life being 50%+ Native American. I had it drilled into me by my father that I was less. By the community we lived in (and to top it off he was white trash so that made it even worse). Years later once back in the states I was assumed to be Mexican so I received that prejudice and attitudes from whites, also because of how dark I used to tan, black, east-Indian, middle-eastern, polynesian, and so on. Due to my narrow facial features and almond shaped eyes however I've been asked if I was half-breed Asian/black, Asian/white, Persian, Arabic, etc.. Though never white. Conversely, when I lived out of the country I was treated as less by all others for two joined reasons. 1. I was an American. 2. I was not a white American... So even by other races and cultures I was treated as different and less because though I was an American, I was not a White American, so that made me some "less than everyone" race.

Finally, and this is a real kicker... Being a true half-breed, I'm even viewed as less by other Native Americans, though most of them are of mixed blood now themselves, just not first generation mixed blood.

The point of that being, I have always recognized that I was different (though not less), in fact a race of one. Where white privilege comes in is that others view me as different... Yet different does not mean equal. So, when I fuck up it was as though expected. When I succeed, it is as though I overcame my racial limitations. That may sound like easy street, yet in the end it states that though they may not consciously feel it, sub-consciously I am viewed as "less than", and though often not intentional, I'm often treated as such.

Where white privilege really comes in though is that state of ignorance. It's difficult to even impossible for those that have not lived like that everyday to understand why I might view things this way or that. Why I might take a helping hand as an insult, or take an insult as just par for the course. The worst of it is though, in that state of ignorance they cannot understand why others treat me somewhat differently. A friend of mine once stated that a server at a café/bar was likely just being more attentive to me because of the way I carry myself, and how I look (using the word attractive), and it worked out perfectly when I had her listen as the server spoke to another, telling the other "how great it was that I carried myself like anyone else, and then followed up with how she didn't want to offend me, or get me upset."

For what? I'm just sitting there having a drink! So how is it now that she has to be concerned about me over anyone else?

So white privilege speaks to the ignorance of white people to the daily experiences of those of another race, in a white dominated society, and how it affects them. We always hear about the prejudice, bigotry and violence. What we never hear about is the underlying feeling of most whites that they got the sweet end of the lollypop simply because of their race, and how that translates into a passive bios, and ignorance of why another feels singled out.
